First hanami party of the year last night, continuing the fine Japanese tradition of getting very, very drunk with your mates under the new cherry blossoms.
They say the short-lived cherry blossoms are a metaphor for the fleeting nature of life, and they're certainly a sign that the bitter cold of winter's over for another year... but mostly it's just a great reason to have a drink.
One of the guys last night was playing something that sounded like a Balinese gamelan but looked very different.
A friend of his makes them by cutting shapes into old LPG gas cylinders with each finger having a different pitch.
You'd want to be sure they were completely empty before firing up the grinder...
