Recycle

First hanami party of the year last night, continuing the fine Japanese tradition of getting very, very drunk with your mates under the new cherry blossoms.

They say the short-lived cherry blossoms are a metaphor for the fleeting nature of life, and they're certainly a sign that the bitter cold of winter's over for another year... but mostly it's just a great reason to have a drink.

One of the guys last night was playing something that sounded like a Balinese gamelan but looked very different.

A friend of his makes them by cutting shapes into old LPG gas cylinders with each finger having a different pitch.

You'd want to be sure they were completely empty before firing up the grinder...

Oh, and some cherry blossoms
